This film is based on a true story about a 9 year old boy named Walter Collins who disappears. His mother Christine goes to the police but they can't find the boy. After five months the police bring the mother a boy and tell her that it is her son. She of course knows it is not her son and tries to get the police to continue looking for him.

She knows this boy is not her son because he is three inches shorter then his last height mark on the door frame. He does look a little like Walter but this boy is circumcised and her Walter was not.
Christine goes to the LAPD with this information and dental records that prove he is not her son.

Captain Jones is getting tired of her because his job is on the line. He has her put in an institution for the insane because she was making waves in the police department. While there, the boy admits to being a runaway just to get to California.

The police uncover a grisly scene based on a tip at a chicken farm owned by the Northcotts. They find a missing boy who was a nephew to Gordon Northcott. Gordon abused him and made him help abduct up to 20 children who Gordon then abused, killed and buried on his farm. He told his nephew that he would kill him if he tried to run. Walter's body was never found and his mother went to her grave never knowing what happened to him.
